Fix “Duplicate variant” in Google Merchant Center
Typical Merchant Center message: Duplicate variant
Reviewed October 14, 2026 against Google’s published rules.
Google reports a duplicate variant when two or more products share the same item_group_id but do not have different values for variant attributes such as size or color. This can show the same offer more than once instead of distinct offers.
How to fix it
- Open Products, then Needs attention, and filter for this issue.
- For each variant that shares an item_group_id, submit unique values, such as its own color or size.
- Or remove the item group ID if the products are not variants of one product.
- In Shopify, check that each variant has its own option values, for example a Size or Color option, and that no two variants repeat the same combination.
- To fix many products at once, download the .csv list of affected products from the Needs attention tab, correct your product data and re-upload it.
