MERCHANT CENTER FIX GUIDES

Fix variants that Google shows as separate products (item_group_id)

Typical Merchant Center message: Missing value [item_group_id] · Variants not grouped

Reviewed October 12, 2026 against Google’s published rules.

Each size or color of a product is its own item in the feed. Google needs a shared item_group_id to show them as one product with options. Without it, variants compete as separate listings or are disapproved.

How grouping works

  1. Every variant has its own unique id (in Shopify usually the variant ID or SKU).
  2. All variants of the same product share one item_group_id, for example the product handle or product ID.
  3. Each variant differs in at least one of color, size, material or pattern, and states that value.
  4. Apparel requires the group id; other products benefit from it.

How to fix it

  1. Use a feed source that sends the product ID as item_group_id; the Google & YouTube channel does this by default.
  2. Make sure variant options are named Color, Size, Material or Pattern so they are read as variant attributes.
  3. Check that no two variants have the same id and that variants of different products do not share a group id.

Check your own catalog for these issues

FeedGuard groups your variants by product handle or product ID, reports variants whose distinguishing option is missing, and fills the group id in the Google feed export.
