MERCHANT CENTER FIX GUIDES

Fix “Missing value [brand]” in Google Merchant Center (Shopify)

Typical Merchant Center message: Missing value [brand]

Reviewed October 12, 2026 against Google’s published rules.

Google requires the brand — the manufacturer’s or maker’s name — for most new products. Products without one can be limited or disapproved, and shoppers cannot filter by brand.

What counts as a brand

  1. The name of the manufacturer or the brand the product is sold under.
  2. For products you make or label yourself, your store or brand name is the brand.
  3. Books, movies and music recordings do not need a brand.
  4. Do not use the store name for products from other manufacturers, and never use words like “n/a” or “generic”.

Where Shopify takes it from

  1. The product’s Vendor field normally becomes the brand in the Google & YouTube channel and in most feed apps.
  2. Check that Vendor holds a real brand, not your supplier’s name, a warehouse code or an empty value.
  3. Fix the Vendor field on the product (or in a bulk edit or CSV import) and refresh the feed.

Check your own catalog for these issues

FeedGuard lists every variant without a brand and, when you export a Google feed, fills in the brand from the Vendor value already in your catalog.
