MERCHANT CENTER FIX GUIDES

Fix “Generic placeholder image” in Google Merchant Center

Typical Merchant Center message: Generic placeholder image

Reviewed October 14, 2026 against Google’s published rules.

Each product needs a main image, sent in the image link attribute, that clearly shows the principal product. Google does not allow generic images except for certain categories. Its examples are logos and pictures that say “No image available”.

What happens

Affected products stay disapproved and do not appear in Shopping ads or free listings until their images are updated.

How to fix it

  1. Open Products, then Needs attention, and filter for this issue.
  2. Give each product a primary image that shows the product itself.
  3. Change the image link URL rather than keeping the same URL with new content. Google says a new URL makes it fetch the image faster.
  4. In Shopify, look for products whose first image is a logo or a default “coming soon” picture.
  5. To fix many products at once, download the .csv list of affected products from the Needs attention tab, correct the image links in your product data and re-upload it.
  6. Google says it can take 24–72 hours for a fix to leave the Needs attention list.

Check your own catalog for these issues

FeedGuard flags image links that look like placeholders and, in its live check, images that do not open, so you can replace them before you upload.
