Fix “Image too small” in Google Merchant Center
Typical Merchant Center message: Image too small
Reviewed October 14, 2026 against Google’s published rules.
Google reports “Image too small” when a product image is too small to be used in an ad or free listing. Products are disapproved when the image does not have the required dimensions.
Sizes in Google’s article
- Apparel: at least 250 × 250 pixels. All other products: at least 100 × 100 pixels.
- Images cannot be larger than 64 megapixels or 16 MB.
- The product should fill no less than 75% and no more than 90% of the image.
- YouTube Shopping ads need at least 500 × 500 pixels to serve on TV.
A new requirement to plan for
Google’s article announces that all product images will need to be at least 500 × 500 pixels. It says that since July 2026 you receive warnings on images that are larger than the minimum but smaller than 500 × 500, that 100 × 100 (and 250 × 250 for clothing) is accepted until January 31, 2027, and that enforcement of the 500 × 500 requirement begins on January 31, 2027.
Replacing small images now means those warnings will not turn into disapprovals later.
How to fix it
- Open Products, then Needs attention, and filter for this issue.
- Replace the image with a larger one that shows the product, using Edit product or by updating the image link in your product data.
- In Shopify, upload a larger image under the product’s Media and make it the first image.
- Google notes that Product Studio can increase resolution, remove backgrounds and generate scenes, in Merchant Center and in the Google & YouTube app in Shopify.
- To fix many products at once, download the .csv list of affected products from the Needs attention tab, correct the image links in your product data and re-upload it.
- Google says it can take 24–72 hours for a fix to leave the Needs attention list.

FeedGuard opens the main image of each product page in its live check and reads its real size, so the small images it detects are listed for you. Images below today’s minimums are flagged as problems. Images under 500 × 500 are listed as a heads-up now and flagged as too small from January 31, 2027.
