Fix “Text too long” in Google Merchant Center
Typical Merchant Center message: Text too long
Reviewed October 14, 2026 against Google’s published rules.
Google reports “Text too long” when the title, the description or both go over the maximum character count. Google truncates the text when it shows it.
Limits in Google’s article
- Titles: up to 150 characters can be submitted, but only up to 70 are displayed on Shopping ads and free product listings. Keep titles to 70 characters or fewer when you can.
- Descriptions: up to 5,000 characters can be submitted. Google recommends around 500–1,000, with the key details in the first 160–500 characters.
- Descriptions should follow standard grammar and end with a punctuation mark.
How to fix it
- Open Products, then Needs attention, and filter for this issue.
- Shorten the title or description for each affected product and put the most important words first.
- Move long marketing copy, care instructions and size charts out of the description field, or shorten them.
- To fix many products at once, download the .csv list of affected products from the Needs attention tab, correct your product data and re-upload it.
