Fix product title problems in Google Merchant Center
Typical Merchant Center message: Title too long · Promotional text in title
Reviewed October 12, 2026 against Google’s published rules.
Google reads the title first. Titles that are too long, shout, or contain promotions can be disapproved or shown less. Good titles also help the right shoppers find the product.
What Google does not allow
- More than 150 characters. Only the first 70 or so are usually visible.
- Promotional text such as “free shipping”, “sale”, “50% off” or “best price”.
- Excessive capital letters, emojis and symbols used for emphasis.
- Repeated keywords, or a title that does not describe the product.
What works
- Put the most important words first: brand, product type, then key details such as color, size or material.
- Make each variant’s title specific, for example “Coastline Linen Shirt – Sand / M”.
- Keep sale and shipping messages out of titles; use sale_price, promotions and shipping settings instead.
